I Screwed Up

Azul Fives Hotel
I'm an idiot.  It is with great sadness that I have to admit I totally screwed up when I booked the hotel for our Cancun trip.  We're still going but if I knew then what I know now we would probably be staying elsewhere.  The Trip Advisor reviews are almost flawless.  I should've known it was too good to be true.

I was actually having a pretty decent Monday until I called to follow up on our reservation and take care of the all inclusive resort fee part of it. When I heard how much it was I almost fell out of my chair.  I mean, I've never been the best at math but I know how to multiply and when I ran the numbers AFTER I got the invoice I realized my mistake.  My appetite was gone.  I couldn't even finish eating my snack because a giant knot of complete and total ick was sitting in the pit of my stomach.  Yes, ick.  I just felt icky, awful and really really stupid for underestimating the cost so much.  I wanted to cancel the trip.  Then I had to tell MJ.  I didn't even want to text him the amount because it was far higher then what I told him it would probably be.

Me:  I'm feeling physically ill right now.  I called to check on the resort fee and it's a lot of money.  It's so much that I want to cry right now (and I almost did).
Him:  What's the price?  Need anything from the store?  I'm getting milk.
Me:  $1,654.00.  It's the price of an entire vacation.  I'm so stupid.
Him:  Just for the all inclusive part right?
Me:  Yes, that's what makes it so bad.
Him:  I'm trying to replicate the El Pollo Loco meal.
Me:  How can you think about food at a time like this???!!!!

Obviously he wasn't as devastated as I was.  I couldn't even begin to recover from this news until I knew he wasn't mad at me.  When I got home he hugged me and told me it was okay and then I felt better.  I'm even starting to get excited about the trip again.

I don't know what went wrong! I'm usually so good about these things.  I guess I couldn't comprehend that it would cost that much since I had no concept of how much a typical all inclusive fee could be.  I'm comprehending it now all right and it sucks.  It's like thinking you got a dynamite deal and booked The Four Seasons for the price of The Best Western and then realizing you actually booked The Four Seasons for the price of The Four Seasons and now you have to pay for it.  I would never have knowingly spent this much on this vacation.  I mean, we have great vacations but I pride myself on finding the best deals balancing quality with price as much as I possibly can.  This is in no way the best deal possible as far as I'm concerned and I don't like that.  I would've chosen someplace else or we might not have gone all inclusive at all had I realized the cost.

I do realize that spending way more on a vacation then you intended is not the worst thing in the world.  This hotel is fabulous and bottom line is I'm lucky to be going there.  What would be worse is if we couldn't pay the fee, had to cancel our trip entirely and lose money on our non refundable airline tickets.  It would be far worse if I booked us a fleabag motel instead and we ended up having a miserable time or if we couldn't ever go on vacation at all.  It just really pisses me off that we are spending money I didn't plan on.   There are people who wouldn't bat an eye at this (MJ) but I am not those people.  I have budgets and bills.  I like getting good deals dammit and this does not feel like a good deal.

I was so rattled that I forgot to ask about booking our airport transportation.  I called back the next day to book a shuttle and  if an expensive limo shows up at the Cancun airport to pick us up I'm done!!

  1. Awww I'm sorry to hear about the sneaky all-inclusive charge!! However...I'm excited for you to get back from your trip & tell us all how fabulous it was and how impressed you were with the vacation even after paying so much for it. Can't wait to see photos! I've been wanting to book an all-inclusive trip to Mexico, so this is a helpful warning - thank you!!

  2. Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear about this, but I would bet you're not the only person who has made this mistake! Sometimes it seems like resorts, especially when it comes to all-inclusive plans, are a little bit sneaky about how they advertise! It sounds like you have the right attitude and will still be able to enjoy a beautiful vacation! This week I got news that my car was going to be a huge ordeal to get fixed and I was SO upset about it, and my husband was the same way, like totally not rattled by the situation. It's just one of those things you can't really do anything about, so you might as well make the most of it!

  3. So on top of paying for the resort there is a resort fee? is that what you found out? mannnnnn I'm sorry! We made some "eh" decisions on our vacation that ended up costing us more. I was like you at the time, knot in my stomach....then I realized "ya know, its okay because we HAVE the money. It could be a lot worse..." and I was just forced to enjoy the overpriced vaca. haha

  4. That is a bummer. BUT, since it's already a done deal, I say live it up and enjoy that vacation to the fullest. Shrimp and lobster for every meal, fancy cocktails by the pool, you name it. In a year from now you'll be able to say, hey, remember that time we paid way too much for our vacation but dined like kings? Yeah, that was fun... :)

  5. I understand the budget thing. I am anal about staying on budget when on vacation, so I get it. You will have a fabulous time and that is what counts.

  6. Oh no, I'm so sorry that happened! I'm totally tight with money (more so than Zach), so I would be panicking too. But it's so good that MJ's a great guy and instantly made you feel better about it. You WILL still have a great trip! And you'll probably enjoy it even more now so you can get your money's worth :). So go ahead, keep gettin' excited!!

  7. Aww, that stinks! But this is what I think ... if you won't be thinking about that extra money spent on this trip in a year from now ... then it was money well spent. But I know exactly how you feel because I would be beating myself up too. That's why I normally have Sean handle it all that way if he screws up it's on him ;).

  8. At least you're getting the most expensive stuff done now and not worrying about it on vacation though, right? I love the idea of an all-inclusive so drink up since you spent more than enough on it and have a great trip!

  9. Ughhh I'm so sorry that happened! I've been there too... getting in way over my head compared to what I thought a trip would cost. But I've never regretted any travel experience! So glad you're looking forward to the trip again, enjoy every second of it ;-)

  11. UGH!! Sorry that happened! I would have been sick over it as well and my hubby would have been like "oh well!" He never worries about anything and it bothers the heck out of me sometimes. lol..But you brought up some good points at least you will be staying at a gorgeous place which is so much better than staying at a really cheap place and being miserable. At least you are still going away and I am sure you will have a fantastic time once the initial shock of the price wears away. Have fun!! xo

  13. Those deals are always so tricky...i believe they do it on purpose just so mistakes like these happen. Glad MJ was sooo understanding...hope you guys enjoy the trip and find time to relax!!!

  14. That is the worst! But you're right, you still get to go on a nice vacation, even if you have to eat ramen for a month to counter that all inclusive fee :) Just make the most of it, and drink and eat as much as possible so you can get your monies worth!

  15. ahh that's annoying, especially if you thought it was a different price. but i've found that all inclusives are still usually a way better deal than paying for a typical hotel. i'm sure you'll still have an amazing time so don't be too hard on yourself!

  16. It's so hard to plan vacations. We just booked a cabin in the mountains for this fall, and you just never know what you're getting into! It definitely could be worse, though, and it's good you still can pay for it. I guess it's a good lesson learned. And it sounds like you'll have a good time anyway so that's good!

  17. This sounds so stressful! I'm very budget conscious, so I know how you feel. At least you guys can still go :) It sounds like it didn't even phase MJ! Haha.

  18. Ouch, yeah, that's a tough pill to swallow. You'll have an amazing time thought and it will all be worth it. Can't wait to ready your trip report :)

  19. Oh, this sucks! You're right, it's not the worst thing in the world but most people have a budget in mind for their holiday and when it exceeds that, it really is like a kick in the stomach! Hey, it better be the best of the best, right?! ;)

  20. Oh no!! I know that feeling all too well...You should see if the resort has free transportation...they usually do!
